The School for Moral Ambition (SMA) is a new organisation that will focus on attracting the most talented people to work on the most pressing issues of our time. The activities of SMA fall into the following categories:

  • Book and Branding: Launch of Rutger Bregman’s book on the topic of moral ambition - the idea that people’s talents should be used for working on global challenges. Launch of a corresponding campaign to establish a prestigious brand that attracts talent and sparks a movement around moral ambition.
  • Community Activities: We will organise Moral Ambition Circles and offer the resources to start their own Circle. These circles help morally ambitious people develop a career that matches their ideals.
  • Exclusive Fellowship Programs: Initiation of targeted, highly selective programs in which small groups of fellows (~12 people) will focus on solving one of the most pressing and neglected global problems together.

Please read our founding principles for a better insight into our mission and guiding values.

about the role

The School for Moral Ambition is a non-profit startup with fast scaling potential. As a strategy professional in the community team, you can help us scale our impact in a financially responsible way.

On a daily basis, you will be the sparring partner of SMA’s Community Director and part of the Community Team. You will help her with strategic advice on a wide range of topics.

The main project you will be working on, is on business models. Previous to the summer, a team of consultants has identified three business opportunities that are most in line with our purpose to stop the waste of talent. You will build on their research and translate this into assumptions to (in)validate and experiments to conduct.

Key responsibilities

  • Research: you will research all sorts of new identified strategic initiatives that will help SMA’s Community grow.
  • Sparring partner: you quickly absorb, process and structure information on new topics. Based on your findings you will advise the Community Director and other relevant stakeholders
  • Set-up experiments: to validate potential new initiatives.
  • Presentations: you will summarise your findings in compelling presentation materials to be shared internally with the management team and the board, as well as externally with other stakeholders when relevant.

What We’re looking for

  • Passion for the concept of moral ambition
  • Proven (>7 years) experience as a strategy professional. This can be as a management consultant with C-level experience, or a comparable function elsewhere.
  • Start-up mindset: you know what an organisation in this phase needs, or are eager to find out.
  • Analytical thinker: you contribute to strategic topics, by quickly researching, processing lots of information and structuring it into preferred scenarios.
  • Effective and direct communication: you present information in an understandable way and easily translate ideas, concepts and calculations into presentations.
  • Proactive and solution oriented: you like to think three steps ahead and are eager to point out potential problems and generate solutions before they arise.
  • Project manager: you know how to turn new initiatives into structured projects, even in a high-paced environment.
  • Flexibility: you enjoy working on different types of subjects, easily switch between topics while keeping your priorities straight.
  • Teamplayer: you place group results over your individual performance and make time to invest in the learning and growth of your colleagues. When difficulties arise in collaboration, you choose courage over comfort.

We are committed to fostering a diverse and inclusive environment. We welcome applicants of all races, religions, gender identities, sexual orientations, ages, national origins, disabilities, and other diverse backgrounds. At the School for Moral Ambition, we value talent and a can-do attitude above traditional credentials.

What we offer

  • A nice office with shared lunch to work from when preferred - but you can work from anywhere, anytime.
  • Colleagues that genuinely care about each other and are exceptionally passionate about improving the world. We are a close-knit team that values having fun and growing together more than most impact-focused organisations.
  • Being part of a starting organisation with global impact potential. You can help make it happen.
  • Valuable experience and expanding your ‘do for good’ network: we are an ambitious team that expects a steep growth trajectory, with a broad network of people who are realising meaningful change.

Application process

  1. Application form: To get started, please fill this application form before September 15th. We review candidates on an ongoing basis.
  2. Test task: You'll be invited to make a test task. This will give you more insight into the work you will do. It will take a maximum of 2 hours.
  3. Interview: We’ll invite shortlisted candidates to a 45-minute interview with the SMA Community director.
